Dora Maar on Centaur 2
This drawing uses Picasso’s painting "Portrait of Dora Maar Seated" (1937) in a different way to the previous image (Dora Maar on Centaur). The imagery in this drawing is placed on the 3D form based upon an interpretation about visual equivalents. For example:
- the ‘flowers’ in the Dora Maar painting with their long lines are used to reflect the lines of The Centaur ‘front legs’ and ‘hips’.
- the ‘rear legs’ of The Centaur reflects the ‘arms of the chair’ in which Dora Maar is seated.
- Dora Maar’s ‘hands’ are used to fill out the form of the flat panels of the 3D centaur by being wrapped around the edges of the 3D form.
This approach creates the effect of camouflage and the viewer is challenged to ‘read’ the 3D form in a new way. This is a significant step forward and forms the basis for a great deal of The Centaur work that follows.
